The Octave and the Mäertchen – Tradition, Devotion, and Celebration in the Heart of Luxembourg

Maertchen

Every spring, Luxembourg City comes alive with the rhythm of the Octave, the country’s most important religious pilgrimage, held in honor of Our Lady of Luxembourg, patron saint of both the City and the Grand Duchy. This tradition, which dates back over 350 years, gathers pilgrims from all over Luxembourg and the Greater Region for a moment of reflection, spirituality, and togetherness.

Originally celebrated over 8 days—hence the name—the Octave now spans two weeks, from the third Saturday after Easter until Pentecost. In 2025, it will take place from May 10 to 25. Masses, prayers, processions… the city becomes a true place of emotion and community gathering.

But the Octave is also known for its festive and friendly atmosphere, thanks to its traditional market: the Mäertchen.

The Mäertchen: A Market with Timeless Charm 🛍️
Held from May 9 to 25, 2025, at Place Guillaume II, the Mäertchen is a true Luxembourgish institution. Originally, this small market allowed pilgrims—often coming from the countryside and during times of fasting—to enjoy a snack and do some shopping after mass.

Today, the Mäertchen has kept its popular soul while embracing modernity. You’ll find:

🎡 fairground rides
🎯 game booths
🍭 local treats
🎁 handmade crafts and souvenirs

For 16 days, it brings a warm, family-friendly, and festive atmosphere to the city center.
