Wine: Organic, biodynamic or natural?

Vinoteca can help us to understand the differences between these three terms.

Make no mistake about it, the world of wine is no stranger to the "organic" trend. Unlike an organic fruit or vegetable, the complexity of winemaking is sometimes hard to understand.

So, what is organic wine? In short, it's wine made from organically farmed grapes. Winemakers can then use certain synthetic products when producing their wines (colourings, additives, yeasts, sulphur etc.).

Winemakers are increasingly moving further away from the traditional rulebook of organic farming. In recent years, we've seen the creation of new labels that certify healthier and more environmentally friendly methods.

Biodynamic agriculture is also shaking up the rules, with a much more holistic approach. It is driven by the desire to create an ecosystem within individual plots of land that allows the grapevines to resume their natural cycle. As well as welcoming all the flora and fauna living among the grapevines, winemakers agree that they must not add synthetic products during winemaking (a few milligrams of sulphur are allowed) and that they must use their own compost and follow the lunar rhythms.

And then there are the increasingly popular "natural" wines, which involve as little intervention as possible. Very often, "natural" winemakers already use a biodynamic approach, but they push this idea even further by refusing to add any products. The resulting wines are pure and bright. They may take a bit of time to get your head around, but "natural" wines certainly bring something new to the industry.
